Admissions

Thank you for considering Ocean Academy as your secondary school.

Why Choose Caye Caulker Ocean Academy?

  • Our classes are small (no more than 18 students per teacher).
  • All core teachers have a University or Associates degree and a passion for teaching.
  • We work with families to help solve financial needs.
  • Teachers provide a hands-on experiential teaching approach. For example, a goal for each course is to have one major project and a field trip
  • Students gain cross-cultural experiences through interaction with visiting service-learning groups
  • Ocean Academy is recognized as a model school for Youth Engagement by the Canadian Centres of Excellence for Children's Well Being
  • Our number-one goal is to educate Caye Caulker students to become young adults with options.  Ocean Academy encourages students, based on skills and interests, to either (a) continue to University in Belize or abroad or, (b),  to work within Caye Caulker’s [or Belize’s] industries.  Students learn skills to start a small island business if that is their vocation.

What will students learn?

  • Ocean Academy follows the Belize Curriculum for all core classes (English (literature and grammar), Math,  Integrated Science, Social Studies, Life Skills, Spanish, P.E., and Information Technology (Computers) .
  • Ocean Academy offers two additional classes:  Marine Biology and Small Business Development
  • Students  have the opportunity to choose short-term elective classes such as guitar, yoga, art, carpentry and languages.
  • Our physical education program is diverse and provides an introduction to many activities in the Caye Caulker tourism industry.  We offer aquatic career development P.E. (PADI scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, swimming, lifeguarding) and team sports P.E. (basketball, beach volleyball, football/soccer).

Is the school licensed by the Belize Ministry of Education?

Yes. We received our license in August of 2008 and opened as the first secondary school on Caye Caulker.

Where is the school located?

We are located at the entrance to Bahia Puesta del Sol and beside the airstrip.  Our close neighbours are Cocoplum Gardens and the Tropic Air office.

What grades do you offer?

Forms I, II, and III.  We will offer Form IV in September of 2010.  We also offer a Bridge program for students who need extra help before entering Form I.

Who is running the school?

Ocean Academy is a non-profit community high school.  The Founders and Administrators are Heidi Curry, Joni Miller, and Dane Dingerson.   Principal Hilda Marin is Caye Caulker born and raised. Teachers are a mix of Belizeans, Americans and Canadians.

What are the school fees (tuition)?

$2000Bz per year

At present, Ocean Academy does not receive funding from the Belizean Ministry of Education. The founders raise money from individuals, donors, and organizations to keep the tuition as low as possible.  For students and families who need further financial help we will discuss financial aid applications and work-study positions.
