Why Choose Caye Caulker Ocean Academy?
- Our classes will be small (no more than 15 students per teacher).
- Every student will use a personal computer every day.
- All core teachers have a University or Associates degree and a passion for teaching.
- CCOA Enrichment Components include Marine Biology, Small Business Development and Operation, Art, and Music.
- We will carefully choose classes for each student so that he or she is learning at his or her appropriate level in a given subject area.
- We will work with all families to solve financial needs.
- Our physical education program is diverse and will provide an introduction to many activities in the Caye Caulker tourism industry.
- Our number-one goal is to educate Caye Caulker students to become young adults with options. CCOA will encourage students based on skills and interests: to continue to University in Belize or abroad, to work within Caye Caulker’s [or Belize’s] industries; or to start a small island business.
- We will cover the Belize Curriculum for all core classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Life Skills, Spanish, and Information Technology (Computers), while using a hands-on teaching approach. For example, each course will have one major project and a field trip.
- Students will have the opportunity to choose short-term elective classes from the following: PADI Scuba Certification, CPR/First Aid Certification, Jewelry Making, Sewing, Kayaking, Snorkeling, Boating, Windsurfing, and Running.
- CCOA will organize team sports; and support clubs and organizations such as the Environmental Club, Chess Club, and Student Council.
- CCOA is interested in your suggestions.
- CCOA is supported by the community: Ms. Neldy Rosado reviewed the complete proposal for the school and said, “I am very supportive of the CCOA. It is a great idea and I am in 100% approval.” Chairman Ralph Humes also reviewed the proposal, presented it to the Council, and reported unanimous approval.
We are licensed by the Belize Ministry of Education
Where is the school located?
School construction is beginning now on land located near the entrance to Puesta del Sol. Follow orange signs for Ocean Academy. See drawings of the elevated, three-classroom, concrete/wood structure.
With which classes will you begin?
First Form, Second Form, and a “Bridge” Preparatory Class (for students who have completed Standard 6, and need extra help before entering First Form). We will add Third Form and Fourth Form in future years.
Who is running the school?
CCOA is a private, non-profit community high school. The Founders and Administrators are Heidi Curry, Joni Miller, and Dane Dingerson. Heidi Curry and Joni Miller will be co-Principals. Teachers will be a mix of American, Candadian, and Belizean.
What is the cost?
In most cases, $200BZ/month. Explanation: We are working hard to raise funds to provide scholarships for each student. We are doing this by taking videos of each student (see
Meet the Students). In their own words, students explain why they want to attend Ocean Academy. If you (or your child) provides a video, we will collect $300BZ/month from donations. That will leave $200BZ/month for the family to pay in tuition. This is approximately the cost of a month of water taxi tickets. For students and families who need further help to pay for this tuition ($200 BZ/month), we will discuss additional scholarships and service trades.
We will help any family solve financial needs.
