Apprenticeship Program Placements for 2008-2009

Wedding Photographer: Yvon has a keen interest in photography and owns his own digital camera.  He is being mentored by wedding planners Scotty Poock and Sally Gilham in the art of wedding photography.  He is also learning Photoshop technology skills.  As of April 21, 2009 Yvon has photographed two Caye Caulker weddings and is being booked for a third.  Yvon has received glowing praise for his professionalism and quality photos.  He uses half of his earnings from each assignment to support his education at Ocean Academy.


Marine Biologist: Mercedes has a passion for marine biology and environmental science.  Mercedes is assisting the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve rangers with their surveys of fish, conch, shrimp and lobster.  She is learning scientific skills such as setting transects, fish I.D.,  collecting and analyzing field data. Mercedes is enrolled in Ocean Academy's scuba diving course, and is also President of the Caye Caulker Environmental Club.


Office Skills:  Mariela, Estrella, Candy and Ramir have all assisted Barbara McIntyre, Manager of Caye Caulker Condos, 1x/week with her office routines.  The students learned skills such as responding to online hotel bookings, business letter correspondance, data entry, receipt writing, and customer service skills. 


Construction and Masonry: Henry, Jaison, Steven and David learned construction skills over the Easter Break.   Construction supervisor Dane Dingerson mentored the students as part of his crew hired to build Ocean Academy's downstairs classroom. Dane said he was impressed with the students' solid work ethic, and willingness to learn from with his skilled workmen.


Gift Shop Salesperson: Destino Fuller is not only Ocean Academy's Bridge teacher, she is also the business owner of Cocoplum Spa and Gardens. Destino is currently opening a new gift shop located on Front Street and is interviewing Ocean Academy students for two after-school positions.  Students will be gain skills in customer service, cashier, and inventory; experience for their resumes; and of course, a salary.
