Teaching and coaching children


Note: minimum 3 hour time commitment at the school (one hour with a teacher and 2 one-hour classes with students)

  • Workshop based on your skills.  Some ideas are: chess, knitting, juggling, jewelry making, music or art, karate, boxing, yoga, carpentry, knot tying, medicinal plants, photography,  etc.
  • Language introduction workshop. Common tourist languages on Caye Caulker are: Italian, Dutch, French, German, Norwegian, Japanese, Chinese, and of course, Spanish
  • Organize and run a sports day/camp for the community children
  • Organize and run a community fair/fundraiser event
  • Organize and run a computer day/camp
  • Organize and run a literacy camp (Core skills in Math, Writing and Reading)
  • Organize and fund an educational field trip  - many children have never even snorkeled on their own reef, let alone visited sites off the island (ex. To the reef, the zoo’s tropical education centre, Lamanai ruins
  • Tutor children afterschool: homework and extra help at elementary (gr.6-8) and highschool (gr.9 and 10) level
  • Coach a sports team or club through a season
  • Job/volunteer as highschool teacher: All employees/volunteers will attend teacher-training orientation sessions.  You will be mentored and supervised by an experienced highschool teacher.  Applications are invited from interested and qualified individuals.  Interviews will follow

    • One unit within a course (1 week minimum commitment).  For example, teach the poetry unit within the English course, or genetics unit within the Science course, or bartering and shopping skills within the Spanish course etc.
    •  A full course at the highschool (Sept-Jan and/or Feb-June).  Ideal for retired teachers, those with significant teaching experience, or for newly certified teachers looking to add practical teaching experience to their resumes.
